Also known as the Royal Botanic Gardens , this massive land area covering over 140 acres is a landmark and tourist attraction in the Central Province and is home to more than 4000 species of plants. Attracting many visitors, foreign and local alike, throughout the year, the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens is a peaceful location for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. The gardens also occupy a loop of the Mahaweli River while it consists of palms, shrubs, ferns, orchids and medicinal plants in its vast garden area.

Currently, the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens are under the administration of the Department of Agriculture and this has been so since the early 1900s after the English rule. The queues to enter the gardens can be quite long due to the many visitors including study groups from schools.
