Legal Marriage Registration

There are a number of legal requirements for registration of marriages of foreign nationals in Sri Lanka that are requested by the government. These are very straightforward while we make sure that the process is smoothly carried out once you have submitted the required documents on time.

• Stamp Fees
• Document Verification Fees
• Handling Fees etc.

Required Documents

• Passports and Original Birth Certificates of both partners
• Proof of Marital Status (Depending on the situation):
  • Unmarried certificate or declaration
  • Divorcees - Divorce certificate and Free to Marry Certificate
  • If Widowed - The Death certificate of your late spouse, your previous marriage certificate, and Free to Marry Certificate
  • If you have changed your name - A Deed Poll / Relevant proof
• Unmarried certificate / Free to Marry Certificate: – An affidavit/statutory declaration signed by a solicitor to confirm who you are and your present status (unmarried/ free to marry). Separate affidavits for the period of time lived in different countries which are certified/legalized by respective Foreign Office & Sri Lankan Mission accredited for that country
• For other nationals living in Turkey/Georgia/Ukraine, the document should be certified by their respective Diplomatic Mission in Turkey

The Process

We should receive all copies of the above-mentioned documents two weeks prior to the date of your proposed marriage while you are advised to send them by courier. Originals of all documents should be brought when you arrive in Sri Lanka while you are requested to be present here at least 4 days prior to your wedding. At least three days should be working days (Monday to Friday) due to government work times. Before finalizing the date of arrival here in Sri Lanka, kindly check with us regarding public holidays since official formalities need to be attended to according to the legal structure. You should also be present here in Sri Lanka about 5 days after your registration so that we can hand over the finalized documents.
